Trent 27-Warwick 0
Wednesday 9Th March 2011
Once again Trent were looking to even the score against Warwick after a difficult away game. Trent had every chance this time with a full team together, our last home game and everyone eager for the win.
Trent were off from the start with strong plays in attack and great work in defence. Trent’s first try came after a fumble from our Vice Captain Jessica Irvine who ran back over the try line, but the game carried on and Trent eventually earned their first try of the game from Emma Wells.
Trent carried on the hard work and Jessica Irvine corrected her fumbled try, with a run round the Warwick team to score. Another try came shortly after, with a good scrum and simple hands down the line to Becca Underwood who landed over the line to score.
With 3 tries from the first half Trent were looking strong and wanted to continue like this through the rest of the game, however Warwick came back strong in the second half and made it hard work for Trent.
Despite this Trent came back to score another try and a massive try saving tackle from Jessica Irvine prevented Warwick putting any points against us on the board.
Overall Trent put in a massive effort and came away with a great win and celebrated our last home game with a victory.

Trent 15 - Birmingham 59
Wednesday 2nd March 2011
After a hard away game before Christmas Trent were looking for a good home game against Birmingham and a chance to show them what Trent are made of.
Birmingham were strong from the start, with solid forwards and quick backs, making our defence work hard. Both teams had good lineouts and good scrums, but continued good work from our hooker Sarah Greatrex helped steal a few scrums.
Birmingham were first to put points on the board as they managed to break through and score. However Trent managed to come back almost straight away with a wide run round to the wing and a score in the corner from Louise Robinson. Trent unfortunately conceded a few more tries before a comeback from Lucy Lobley breaking over the try line just before the half ended.
During the second half Trent continued to play hard but conceded more tries before Sally French managed to score her first try for Trent in the far corner, great passage of play and with support pushed over the line to score.
Due to playing with 14 players there were rolling subs which provided the chance for several people to get on and play, Steph Harrison, Hanna Sproz’d, Rachel Crocker and Emily Hogg all came on and helped keep Trent fighting till the end. Lucy Lobley stayed on and played despite Stu wanting to take her off and moaning about being hurt, earning her Dick of the Day.
Despite losing again to Birmingham, Trent played exceptionally well and took a lot from the game.

Trent 87 - Oxford Brooks 18
Wednesday 2nd February 2010
It was time for yet another win for Trent womens rugby. The girls travelled all the way to Oxford, with everyone getting a few naps in on the way down and some lovely pictures as a result!! After yet another one of Jess Irvine's 'warm ups' the girls were rearing to go!
Within the first four minutes of the match Trent already had points on the board. With some great support in the backs and a quick pass from Jess Irvine to Kaila Hall, Trent were 5-0 up. There were, as usual excellent runs from Nikki Hudson and Fran Eggleshaw, who were also putting in hard hits, making Oxford Brooks fully aware that they were there on the pitch! The scrums were tough, however this didn't phase our forwards, Sarah Greatrex proved how much she has come on in the last few weeks as hooker with some great steals of the ball. Lobbers was on top form with scoring a try from the back of the scrum, determined to break through Oxford Brooks' defensive line. Michaela Kerrigan at scrum half, was demonstrating some impressive passes, as well as converting some of the trys scored! Jess Irvine managed to break down the line and score a try with the help and support from most of the backs.
Becca Underwood was showing some great tatics on the pitch, with excellent runs, gaining essential ground, good support and also scoring numerous trys. For the freshers that were on the pitch, they really stepped up and showed everyone how much they have come on in the last few months. Sally French was unstoppable, running through Oxford Brooks players, dodging their attempts to tackle her, Beth Hughes and Lizzie Strachen were also very involved in the match, both started for the first time and were not shying away from anything. Lizze was getting stuck into the game, with a few pick and goes, storming into Oxford Brooks.
With Oxford Brooks having an injured player, the match was moved to another pitch, delaying the game for a while. Soon they were back in the game, however this time both teams were down to 13 players. This allowed Oxford Brooks to have a chance to score a few times, but this didnt stop Trent. Fran Eggleshaw took a penatly, which was offloaded to Becca Underwood, who had her third try of the match! Nikki Hudson, who again was at number 10, was constantly breaking through, gaining essential ground. In one attempt she managed to offload to Jess Irvine, who scored her fourth try of the match. Lobbers was continuous throughout the match, she was strong in defense, constantly up in Oxford Brooks' faces but was also breaking through their defensive lines and getting those points on the board for Trent.
Overall the girls player tremendously well, they were good in defense, and supporting each other in attack, constantly on each others backs in support. The backs had some amazing runs and the forwards were putting in those tough hits.

Trent 27 - Nottingham University 0
Wednesday 2nd February 2011
Everyone was very hyped up for one of Trent's biggest matches against rivals Nottingham University. With only 6 weeks to go until varsity, it was vital that Trent showed Beeston what they were in for, and rumor had it that the team they had brought to the match was going be their varsity squad. After their last match against them Trent were looking forward to another win, however there were a lot of changes on the pitch, with two important players missing from the backs and forwards, and welcoming back Rachel Buckpit who stepped into play number 12. Trent were very strong in the rucks, with Fran Eggleshaw and Sarah Greatrex showing good support and constantly putting Beeston under pressure.
Trent have always needed to work on their defensive lines, however this match they were really on top form, not letting Beeston break through that line, or coming anywhere near to it. Alice Pryor ended up having to come off the pitch after some great play, due to a back injury, which meant that it was Sarah Greatrex's turn to practice scrumming again, which luckily this time were contested! There were some very impressive steals of the ball from the line outs by Sarah Greatrex as well! Nikki Hudson, who again was out of her normal position but stepped up as her role as captain and filled in the number 10 space, was very strong against the opposing position. Trent also had the chance to practice mauling against Beeston, something which they rarely get the chance to do in matches; they were very strong and gained vital ground for trys to be scored!
Trys were scored by Fran Eggleshaw, who was constantly making strong runs throughout the match and handing off anyone in her way! Jessica Irvine, as usual was a machine during the match, gained essential ground, and did some very impressive runs up the side of the pitch and of course no one was able to catch her! Kaila Hall managed to break through the Beeston line and score a try, however this was slightly over shadowed by her kicking skills which ended up with the Ref getting smacked in the face by the ball! Of course this resulted in her having the pleasure of getting dick of the day. Emma wells and Heather Foxen had some amazing tackles and crash balls, which were clearly putting the opposition off! With Trent having such an easy win, it was time to put some newbies on the pitch, Lizza Strachen and Beth Hughes came onto the pitch with ten minutes to go and both had some good runs and tackles. Despite the fact that Beth ended up with a black eye, it was great to see them both on the pitch, well done girls!! Michaela Kerrigan had a good game, with some quick balls out of the scrum and her usual show and goes, which no one ever catches on to!! With a 27-0 win, varsity is looking extremely hopeful and spirits are sky high within the team! Let's crack on with the fitness girls; it's the only thing stopping us.

Trent 0 - Warwick 30
Saturday 30th January 2010
Having to rearrange the match due to the heavy snow before Christmas, the team had to play on a Saturday, which caused problems due to availability. However many of the girls gave up their weekend for the match, despite the fact that due to the lack of numbers from both teams, it ended up being a 12 sided match.
This made the match extremely hard for both sides, due to the amount of space suddenly made available, Trent were struggling to find a good structure with only 12 players. However they still managed to keep up the defence and put in their hard hits. There were some changes on the pitch, with Rhiann Halpin in the backs as centre and Becca Underwood as fullback, both girls stepped up and took on the positions with confidence. Katherine Katovsky had an impressive match, putting in some good tackles and nearly scoring on numerous occassions. Louise Robinson had a great game, demonstrating her kicking skills, going in for touch, which gained essential ground for Trent. Kaila Hall was excellent as usual, not just in the game but with her communication on the pitch, she kept the team place throughout the match! With the lack of players, Trent were losing to Warwick, however they did not lose faith and in true Trent spirit carried on working as a team, keeping their defensive line, putting in hard hits and some great runs. Becca Underwood showed everyone what speed she has in her, gaining that ever essential ground for Trent, with some great catches too. With the situation of the game not in Trents favour, the team had some changes, to give those who had come the chance to get game time. Poppy Horn came on for Kaila Hall and Hanna Sprozed for Heather Foxen, who was down with rib problems. Both Poppy and Hanna had an excellent game, they got stuck in and showed great support throught the match.
Overall the girls played extremely well, however were unable to turn over the possession of the ball and get into their territory. Warwick were able to break through and score, nevertheless the girls still played a great match.

Trent 5 - Stirling 24
Wednesday 26th January 2011
With two international players Trent were anxious about the result of the Stirling game. The opposition had travelled all the way from Scotland, so this was hopefully going to be a bonus for Trent. However with them practicing hand offs and seeing some of the tackles put into practice by the Stirling girls before the match had even started, nerves began to rise. Within the first five minutes, Jessica Irvine managed to shock them by scoring the first try of the match, putting Trent 5-0 in the lead. Unfortunately Michaela was unable to convert the try this time. As usual there were very strong runs from Lucy Lobley and Fran Eggleshaw, and some massive hits from them both. However Stirling were well trained in their defense and were quick up on Trent, causing problems in the rucks with some very impressive ball steals. Nikki Hudson who again was out of her normal position was putting in some hard hits alongside Rhainn Halpin. Stirling soon managed to get some points on the board with their number 10 converting the try. However needless to say, Trent were putting up a very strong fight, considering the fact that this team were in a higher league. There were some great backs tackles from Kaila Hall and Jessica Irvine, who had some great chases and impressive tackles right on the try line, preventing more points being scored. Trent have been practicing their defensive lines and putting pressure on the opposition, this was clearly seen by a few of the girls in the match, especially Sally French and Nikki Hudson. Stirling were winning and with a vital player off the pitch due to an ankle injury, Trent were starting to tire. However they were still putting in some great tackles and despite the fact that Jess was nearly flattened by the number 6, they were putting up a good fight in true Trent spirit. Into the second half and with a very motivational speech from the Captain and Vice Captain, the girls were rearing to go. With some changes on the pitch too, much to some of the girl's pleasure, the fight for a win from Trent was even more sought after. However due to a neck injury from one of Trent's players, the match had to be forfeited much to both teams disappointment.

Trent 15 - Cambridge 51
Wednesday 19th January 2011
Trent were determined to get a win against Cambridge this time, after the last match against them! However there were a lot of changes on the pitch due to missing players, with some important forwards such as Lobbers and Rhiann playing back and Heather Foxen out of position as blind side flanker. Cambridge won the kick off, so Trent were preparing themselves to get in the right frame of mind, this wasn't going to be an easy game. As the forwards already knew there would be some hard scrums from Cambridge, as they had such a forceful drive behind them. However due to some mistakes from both sides, there were a few collapsed scrums. As usual there were some impressive quick balls from the back of the scrum, and a very notable impressive run off the back of the scrum from Fran Eggleshaw, allowing her to gain essential ground, which resulted in a try, due to her taking advantage of the overlap available. There have been some real improvements this year from some of the girls, especially Laura Hollinshead and Alicia Hayes, Laura showed some great off-loads and was on the shoulder more often than not of the ball carrier showing great support. Trent still didn't have a great defensive line, allowing some of Cambridge's backs to break through, demonstrating some nifty moves. Although they were impressive, they were still extremely hard to defend. However in the second half, Trent managed to work together on the defensive line, still room for improvement. Despite the fact that Trent were losing, they managed to keep their heads up and carry on in true spirit. Again the girls put into practice what they'd learnt in Monday's training which was placing the ball, despite the fact that Cambridge had a lot of tries on the board, this newly learnt skill prevented them from rucking over and gaining more points. In the second half, Trent were determined to get some more try's, as usual Jess Irvine managed to score another try, and of course no one managed to get close to her in the process! There were some replacements on the pitch due to injury; Emily Hogg came on with amazing courage and strength in her second contested scrum, against a very hard team, well done Emily! For her efforts in the scrums and in support she was awarded with dame of the day. Despite the fact that she's a feisty forward, Lobbers did some impressive moves as a back, with the occasional switch, maybe she is a secret back after all. However the impressiveness of her moves was soon replaced by the hilarity of her and Nikki Hudson running into each other, resulting in both of them receiving dick of the day! Good effort there! Twice now Nikki, three times means punishment!! Trent were still as determined as ever and carried on playing to their full ability. Alicia again showing some impressive runs and an awesome offload to Kaila Hall, resulting in Trent's final try. As normal Trent never let the score affect their enthusiasm, they were motivated right through until the end and walked away with their heads held high as the game was well fought. Well done girls, tough match coming up next week, let's show them what we've got!!

NTU 34 -Bedfordshire 19
Wednesday 12th January 2011
Trent were unsure of what the outcome for the Bedfordshire game would be, due to the mixture of results coming from the team as well as Trent's lack of fitness over the Christmas holidays. Bedfordshire turned up to the match slightly unprepared with an inexperienced front row, resulting in uncontested scrums, much to Trent's disappointment. This was the first time for trying out a new front row which consisted of Emma Wells, Sarah Greatrex and Alice Pryor. They all showed some great support in rucks and took on some big hits. Hopefully next match they will be able to practise scrumming together.
Trent were lacking in fitness due to the Christmas break, allowing for Bedfordshire's strong number 8 and 13 to break the defensive line and gain vital ground to get points on the board. As usual there were some amazing off loads and running lines from Fran Eggleshaw and Nikki Hudson, with great support from all of the pack. Both Fran and Nikki demonstrated some impressive switches off the back of the scrums putting Bedfordshire's defensive tactics to the test. In the first half tries were scored by Lucy Lobley and Nikki Hudson. Essential ground was gained by Alicia Hayes as well as Charlotte Seward and Lucy Lobley. It was very clear that every single Trent player on the pitch had learnt from Monday's training and was put into practise the tackle offloads. The pace of the game was slowed down due to the mistakes made by both sides, meaning there were numerous scrums.
Trent were tough and determined in the second half of the match to get another win under their belts. Due to the uncontested scrums, this gave Trent a chance to try out different players; Steph Harrison made her debut on the pitch as a forward. There were impressive tackles from Katherine Katovsky inside Trent's 22, making the most of her time on the pitch. Jess Irvine also managed to make a break and of course no one managed to catch her, meaning a further try for Trent. There were also some interesting moves and ideas on the pitch, one in particular being from captain Nikki Hudson, with a rather unsuccessful kick!! Very amusing, maybe a little more practise in that area Nik! It was apparent that communication was lagging, however as normal Kaila Hall could be heard, dominant throughout the match.
Despite the fact that everyone was suffering from over indulgence at Christmas, Trent fought well as usual, and put their all into it. Unfortunately Bedfordshire were forced to retire early, with only 10 minutes to go, due to injured players. A brilliant start to the year girls, another win under our belts, think it is safe to say we will all be hitting the gym hard in preparation for the rest of the season!

NTU 46 - 0 Oxford Brookes
Wednesday 3rd November 2010
After playing Oxford Brookes in the cup final last year and narrowly missing a victory, we were looking for payback and looking forward to a good game. Throughout all of Trent's games they have been putting on amazing pressure right from the kick off and again in this match the pressure was on. Although Oxford were taking strong ball on the blind side there were some strong tackles put in by Becca Underwood, Lucy Lobley and Jessica Irvine. Trent suffered some immense pressure from Oxford, they performed well in defence pushing them back 10-20 metres everytime they entered Trent's 22.
In attack Trent were making some amazing strong runs by Heather Foxen, Emma Wells and Fran Eggleshaw who also had a really strong hand-off making offloading a much easier task, giving players like Charlotte Seward and Lucy Lobley a chance to run through Oxford's defence. Forwards wise Trent seem impossible deal with by immense tackles and strong rucking, however Laura Hollinshead stepped up to the mark this game making her self everywhere and using her pace and strength to be amazing in defence. Fresher Vicky West had a very positive game putting pressure on her opposite number and making quicker ball to number 10 Michaela Kerrigan who as well as giving some good passes to our centres also made some good show and goes getting past her opposite number a few times. Through good support play by the whole team Trent put points on the board with tries from Jessica Irvine, Charlotte Seward, Callie-Jo Smith, Becca Underwood, Emma Wells.
In the second half our fitness caught up with Trent making them drop to Oxford's level making contact and attacking play very hard for themselves however with breakaway runs from Lucy Lobley and Jessica Irvine Trent were able to pick up there game again. Subs were made giving fresher Aimee Morris who enjoyed her time on the pitch as well as making an impact, also Sarah Greatrex got time on the pitch and with her first touch on the ball got perfect body position to make useful yards, however getting a blood injury didn't give her a lot of game time which was unfortunate as I think with her hands on the ball she would surprise her self with her performance.

NTU 58 - 0 Nottingham 1st
Wednesday 27th October 2010
It was a bit of a rush together with the team coming at all different times and then the ref being late himself. Just like the Cambridge game the pressure was put on straight from the kick off, Nottingham were struggling with structure from the strong running in defence and attack from Trent. All the hard work by Trent's forwards paid off when the ball was shipped quickly down the line reaching Kaila Hall scoring the first try in the corner. Throughout the first half the Trent forward's were tested by Nottingham's big strong runners but nothing was getting past them. The field soon opened up giving, Jessica Irvine a chance to run a score a try. There were also break throughs by Lucy Lobley using her support by Jessica Irvine and Becca Underwood unfortunately a try didn't prevail but a good attacking position did. Unfortunately for Nottingham a lot of the play was in their 22, with fresher Sal French offloading in the tackle and using good footwork earning her star of the match. Michaela Kerrigan stepped to the position of scrum half a position she has not played in while giving good decent balls to 10 Louise Robinson, where our strong runner 12 Charlotte Seward was running onto the ball at real pace breaking the line plenty of times and getting herself a well earned try. Defensively Trent were challenged by some strong and also some nimble runners however Trent kept there structure and the few times Nottingham had chances to score Trent kept pushing them back. Set pieces were another strong part of Trent's game, holding our own in the scrums and dominating in the lineouts. Even a penalty move proved a success where 2 pods of forwards were set up thinking the ball was going to the 1st pod, the ball was shipped to the second pod where the defence was weaker and CJ Smith scored a try as well as being smashed into the post, I think she'll agree it was worth it. Kaila Hall also scored another try in the corner again using her speed to run around the Nottingham defence. Jessica Irvine's speed was also no match for the Nottingham as she was able to out run them and run in another try.
Second Half, the forwards were finding themselves quite evenly matched however it never stopped massive gainline runs from Emma Wells, Rhianne Halpin and newcomer Alice Pryor. Backrows Fran, Laura and Lucy were again a force to be reckoned with making a nuisance of themselves all over the pitch and there to pick up any pieces. 2 more tries were run in from Kaila using her pace making her total try count of 4. Lucy Lobley got herself on the scoresheet after coming back on and taking it down the blindside after a ruck. Substitute Vicky West went to scrum half stepping up to the mark even through her illness and making some good passes to now 10 Michaela. Izzy De Carles came to wing making some darting runs into the defensive line however still not finding the space to make a run. Beth Hughes made her debut on the pitch at second row and even though confidence was low she got herself stuck in. To top off all the tries Michaela scored 4 conversions.
All in all it was an amazing game to watch and as players an amazing game to play, everyone played really well and it was a team effort to make the score as it was. There is nothing like the feeling when you BEAT your local rivals by 58 points well done girls and bring on the next game. J

NTU 5 - 5 Cambridge
Wednesday 20th October 2010
I think I can speak for everyone one when I say we were a little apprehensive about this game, Cambridge have been winning this league for many years now but have always chosen to stay down. However the team seemed to become focused towards the end of the warm-up and run through and were ready for a tough game. Trent kicked off with a flying start; they were in the Cambridge 22 with immense pressure looking to steal the ball at any opportunity. Trent managed to turn over the ball at about the half way line and with some strong running by forwards, Lucy Lobley, Heather Foxen and Alicia Hayes and crucial ground was made, however Alicia faced an elbow to the head that split her eye open and had to the be taken off for the rest of the game, which was unfortunate as you could tell she was going to have a storming game. Fresher Hannah Sproston stepped up to the mark making some tackles you would expect from an experienced player. Most of the plays were continuing in the middle of the pitch, however Trent having most of the possession and punching holes in the Cambridge defence. Trent were dominating in the lineout's, the lifters and our agile jumper we were turning over ball as well securing our own. Trent were also challenged in their defence finding themselves on their own try line a couple of a times, however with powerful work by the forwards and crucial tackles made by Jessica Irvine, Becca Underwood and Pip Jackman-Day stopped any try scoring opportunities pushing Cambridge back at least 10 metres every time. Even though our scrumhalf Vicky West was receiving hassle from her opposite number putting on pressure she performed some quality passes to our 10 Louise Robinson giving our strong running, fierce handoff 12 Charlotte Seward a chance to run through Cambridge's back line and present opportunities to 13 Pip. Trent were in their own half where the ball was shipped quickly enough down the back line where Jessica Irvine was able to pick a hole in the defence and put on her rapid pace and put 5 points on the Trent scoreboard, shortly followed half time. The pressure still stayed on in the second half with some "BOOM" tackles made by Heather Foxen and CJ Smith. Throughout the whole game the performance of Lucy Lobley and Fran Eggleshaw was of high quality. Being typical back row players getting themselves all around the pitch and stealing any loose ball and causing havoc to the opposition. Emma Wells and Rhiann Halpin also having a good game getting themselves in every ruck and making some ground in their runs. You could see Izzy De Carles was dieing to have a good run on her wing but the opportunity never came, however her chasing back defence was spot on and stopped try scoring opportunities from Cambridge. CJ Smith unfortunately had to come off due to an ankle injury no matter how much she wanted to warrior on and was replaced with Katherine Katovsky, even though Katherine had not had much experience in the forwards played really stepped up to the mark and performed well. Unfortunately through a lot of pressure from Cambridge and tiredness from Trent, Cambridge scored under the post but not converted leaving the score a tie. After having only a couple of training sessions with the girls all together the performance was something all the girls were proud of, although there was a feeling that there should have been victory, it was a performance to be proud of and has got all of us excited of the performance for the rest of the season.
